USA Swimming Report: 800m Free Relay Breaks Olympic Record In Prelims
David Walters, Ricky Berens, Erik Vendt and Klete Keller set the American record in the prelims of the men’s 800m free relay Tuesday night at the 2008 Olympic Games. Their time of 7:04.66 was more than three seconds faster than the rest of the qualifying field.“We knew we had to go fast,” Berens said. “Everyone wants to get on the finals team, so everyone is pushing each other to get that spot. We have four of the fastest guys in the world competing for one spot.”
Every American swimming in prelims Tuesday advanced to Wednesday morning's semifinals. Here's a look at what happened in Tuesday's prelims, and races to watch in Wednesday morning's semifinals and finals.
Men’s 100m Free: Semifinal
Both Americans, Garrett Weber Gale and Jason Lezak advanced to the semifinals of the men’s 100m free, qualifying eighth and 11th in prelims, with times of 48.19 and 48.33, respectively. World record-holder Eamon Sullivan of Australia is the top seed in 47.80.
“Yesterday was very emotional for m,” Weber-Gale said. “It has been a pretty tiring day coming off that high in the morning, I got in the pool today to cool myself down from the excitement. I’m just taking one day at a time.”
“I just wanted to get to the semifinals and not make the same mistakes I did in Athens (where he didn’t qualify), so I went out hard” Lezak said.
Women’s 200m Free: FINAL
American record-holder Katie Hoff qualified as the second seed for Wednesday’s finals with a time of 1:57.01 in semifinals. Sara Isakovich of Slovenia is the top seed in 1:56.50, but Italy’s Federica Pellegrini, who qualified third, set the world record in Monday’s prelims in 1:55.45. Hoff’s teammate Allison Schmitt missed the final by one-hundredth, finishing ninth in 1:58.01.
Men’s 200m Fly: FINAL
Michael Phelps’ Olympic record of 1:53.70 is the top seed heading into tomorrow’s finals of the men’s 200m fly. Phelps broke the Olympic record in Monday’s prelims and then tied it again in Tuesday’s semifinals. Teammate Gil Stovall missed the finals, qualifying ninth in 1:55.36.
Women’s 200m Fly: Semifinal
Kathleen Hersey is the top American qualifier for the semifinals of the women’s 200m fly, seeded seventh in 2:07.65. Elaine Breeden qualified ninth in 2:07.92.
“I felt pretty nervous,” Hersey said. “I had knots in my stomach most of the day. This was the most nerve-racking swim I’ve had since Trials. The crowd really gets you going, though.”
“I was really nervous after the 100 fly didn’t go my way,” Breeden said. “I battled demons all day. That shook my confidence a bit, but I’m pleased with my performance tonight. I just wanted to get into the semifinals.”
Men’s 200m Breast: Semifinal
Hungary’s Daniel Gyurta set the Olympic record in the men’s 200m breast in prelims Tuesday with a time of 2:08.68. Americans Eric Shanteau and Scott Spann qualified for semifinals as the seventh and 10th seeds, turning in times of 2:10.29 and 2:10.61.

Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry is the top seed with an Olympic-record time of 2:09.53. Also in the mix is Australia’s Stephanie Rice, who set the world record in the 400m IM on Sunday.
Men’s 800m Free Relay: FINAL
