USA Swimming Report: Soni Breaks American Record In Prelims Of 200m Breast
Rebecca Soni broke the American record Wednesday night in the prelims of the 200m breast at the 2008 Olympic Games. Soni’s time of 2:22.17 eclipsed the former Olympic record of 2:23.37, set by Amanda Beard in 2004, by more than a second. It is .27 seconds faster than the former American record set by Beard at the 2004 Olympic Trials.“It felt great,” Soni said. “I didn’t even know it was an Olympic record. It reminded me that I am in the right place and not to stress, just kind of relax and enjoy it. Hopefully I will break it again, but I am sure it will be broken a few more times in the rest of the meet.”
Here's a look at what happened in Wednesday's prelims, and races to watch in Thursday morning's semifinals and finals:
Men’s 200m Breast: FINAL
Scott Spann qualified as the third seed for the finals of the men’s 200m breaststroke, turning in a time of 2:09.08 in Wednesday’s semifinals. Teammate Eric Shanteau will miss swimming in the finals after finishing 10th in semis in 2:10.10. Japan’s Kosuke Kitajima set the Olympic record Wednesday in 2:08.61 and will be the top seed in tomorrow’s finals.
Women’s 100m Free: Semifinal
Both Natalie Coughlin and Lacey Nymeyer advanced to the semifinals of the women’s 100m free in 53.82 and 54.62, respectively. They are the fourth and 14th seeds. The top seed for Thursday’s semifinals is Hanna-Maria Seppala in 53.60.
Mens’ 200m Back: Semifinal
Ryan Lochte and Aaron Peirsol, tied as the top swimmers of all time in this event, are the first and second seeds heading into Thursday’s semifinals with times of 1:56.29 and 1:56.35, respectively.
Women’s 200m Fly: FINAL
Kathleen Hersey and Elaine Breeden both qualified for the finals of the women’s 200m butterfly as the fifth and eight seeds, respectively, in 2:06.96 and 2:07.73. Zige Liu of China qualified first for Thursday’s finals in 2:06.25.
Men’s 100m Free: FINAL
The world record was broken twice in the semifinals of the men’s 100m freestyle Wednesday. Alain Bernard of France broke it in the first heat in 47.20, only to have that mark erased a few minutes later in the next heat by Australia’s Eamon Sullivan in 47.05. Jason Lezak, the hero of the men’s 400m free relay Monday, advanced to tomorrow’s finals with as the sixth seed in 47.98. Garrett Weber-Gale finished 10th in 48.12 and will not be swimming finals.
Women’s 200m Breast: Semifinal
Rebecca Soni set the American and Olympic record, qualifying as the top seed in the women’s 200m breaststroke (2:22.17). Former American record-holder and defending Olympic champion Amanda Beard did not advance to finals, finishing 18th in Wednesday’s prelims in 18th in 2:27.70.
Men’s 200m IM: Semifinal
Ryan Lochte, the second-fastest swimmer of all time in this event, is the top seed for Thursday’s semifinals in 1:58.15. World record-holder Michael Phelps is the sixth seed, qualifying in1:58.65.
Women’s 800m Free Relay: FINAL
France broke the meet record in Wednesday’s prelims in 7:50.37, just .28 seconds off the world record held by the United States. The U.S. also swam under the former meet record time and is the second seed for Thursday’s finals in 7:52.43.
