There are two events in the 2008 Olympic Games Synchronized Swimming Competition, Team and Duet.
1. Russia
Russia is on top, winning the team event at the last two Olympics and the last five world championships. In the duet? Gold at the last two Olympics and the last three world championships. Expect the same in Beijing.
2. Spain
Spain is on the rise, finishing second at the 2007 world championships as a team and taking gold in the duet. Their swimmers have the experience and skills to fight for a medal. Will they? The Spainish duet pair, Gemma Mengual and Andrea Fuentes, won gold at the Olympic Qualifiaction tournament.
3. Japan
Usually number two, Japan has been slipping a bit recently since the retirement of Miya Tachibana and Miho Takeda. Will the new team members be able to capture a medal?
4. China
China has no medals at the Olympics, but for 2008 they have brought in Japan's best coach. Since then, they have moved up the rankings, finishing just outside the medal stand at recent world championships. How will they do in their home pool?
5. USA
The USA has won medals in the past, but the team for 2008 only has one returning Olympian (2004 alternate swimmer Andrea Nott). The US team has been among the top 5 at the last two world championships, but just - finishing 4th in 2005 and 5th in 2007. Will they perform above their projected level and jump on the podium?
