The Olympic Swimming pool events at the 2012 Summer Olympics are from 28 July through 4 August in the London Aquatic Center. Olympic open water marathon swimming is on two days, 9 and 10 August in Hyde Park. Unlike the 2008 Beijing Olympic swimming schedule (prelims at night, finals in the morning), the 2012 London Olympics swimming schedule returns to a traditional morning preliminary, evening semi-final and finals format.

Heats, Semifinals, and Finals in the Olympic Swimming Pool
For events shorter than 400 meters, the Olympics uses a heats - semifinal - final format. Heats are swum by everyone entered in the event in the morning. The fastest 16 swimmers from the heats advance to the evening semifinals, and the fastest 8 from semifinals advance to the next night's finals.The 400 meter events use a heats - finals format. All swimmers race in the heats, and the fastest 8 swim in that evening's finals.
The 800 and 1500 use a heats - finals format. The heats are held on one day in the morning, and finals are held at the next day's evening session. All swimmers race in the heats, and the fastest 8 swim in the finals.
Relays use a use a heats - finals format. The fastest 8 morning relays qualify for that evening's finals.
