Swim Power 3 DVD

The Bottom Line

The Swim Power 3 DVD teaches a great program for swimmers to add to their training routine to increase their freestyle pull strength and technique. It is a simple, inexpensive way to increase swimming ability and speed. The program can be used in almost any setting - at the pool, beach, gym, or at home, no water required.

I have used a program like it in the past, and continue to do so. I like the Swim Power 3 ideas enough that I am going to alter my current dryland program to be sure I include all of the Swim Power 3 dryland exercises.

Pros

  • Simple strength program for freestyle swimming
  • Relatively brief amount of time commitment per workout to get positive results
  • Exercises can be done anywhere - poolside, beach, home, gym, office
  • Effective strength and injury prevention program
  • Included flexibility exercises make a good addition to the program

Cons

  • Very specific to freestyle pulling only
  • Requires equipment (but just one type, a stretch cord/surgical tubing - and that is included)
  • Must be done regularly to get the best result
  • Important to incorporate both the cord workout and the support muscle workout for best results
  • Based on a specific idea on freestyle pulling that may be incomplete (I believe it's the right idea)

Description

  • A dryland program aimed at helping freestyle swimmers improve their freestyle pull technique and strength
  • Part of the Swim Power series for swimmers and triathletes
  • Includes a DVD, a manual, and an elastic training cord
  • Exercises can be done anywhere - poolside, beach, gym, home, or office
  • DVD includes other material, like flexibility, in-water drills, and pre-habilitation/injury-prevention shoulder exercises

Guide Review - Swim Power 3 DVD Review - Improve Freestyle Swimming Pull Technique and Strength

Steve Tarpinian's Swim Power 3 DVD is aimed at freestyle pull strength development. Straightforward, simple, and (from what I know of dryland strength training) effective.

The Swim Power 3 Dryland Training System includes the DVD, a Manual, and a set of Elastic Training Cords. The Swim Power 3 DVD demonstrates and discusses the training program and more:

  • How to use the stretch cords
  • Safety precautions
  • In-water drills that will help
  • Shoulder flexibility exercises
  • Shoulder support muscle strengthening
  • Bonus material (the value of training camps; running tips; breaking down swimming myths)
The Elastic Training Cords are central to the program; they are the resistance mechanism that the swimmer uses on land to mimic the freestyle pull pattern. Doing that pull pattern properly, against resistance, helps develop strength along the specific pull path. The Swim Power 3 Manual shows a training plan for integrating the exercises into your overall swim training, and has tips for getting the most from your swim training.

There are 7 chapters on the DVD:

  1. Introduction
  2. Equipment
  3. Exercises
  4. Swimming Drills
  5. Shoulder Flexibility
  6. Shoulder Strength
  7. Bonus Material

Steve Tarpinian's Swim Power series is extremely effective no matter what level of swimmer you are, I swam distance freestyle at the collegiate division 1 level and under 49 minutes in Hawaii Ironman and it helped me
