Crosstraining
- Swimming is the very best form of exercise for cardio-vascular health and over-all body conditioning! That said, no one should rely solely on one form of exercise. Adding weight bearing cardio and strength training will not only round out your work out but make it less boring. Results will be better and you'll be more likely to stick to it. Remember muscle burns fat even at rest, thus boosting weight loss.

significantly slimmer
- I swim 15 hours a week, and I am a competitive swimmer, I have gotten significantly slimmer and I never feel like sleeping for hours. In fact, I swim at 5:30 in the morning every day!!!!

Disagree
- 20 lengths is a warm up. You need to swim for an hour. If all you can do is 20 lengths in an hour, do 21 the next time, then 22. Ideally you should work up to an easy 1600 meters in an hour, 64 lengths. By the time you get there, the pounds will be flying off.

Agree
- Provides an overall fitness regime even for those with skeletal problems. You only have to look at the size of open water/ channel swimmers.

agree
- Best way of losing weight according to my experience is to do lot of cardio i.e. exercises like swimming, cycling, running and also to maintain a proper diet. weight training can never make you lose extra pounds. It is also very important to follow a strict fittness schedule or else you wont get the expected results.

Agree
- I have to be careful NOT to lose any more weight! I'm on a swimteam, and we swim for an hour and a half, and that's lots of calories. I've lost some, but I'm already skinny so I have to be careful.

Don't agree
- I've been swimming a lot lately, I don't compete, I actually started swimming because I thought I'd be fun and also to see how i'd shape my body. I can say it's by far the best exercise to achieve that dreamed body we've all wanted. It's not to big but lean and sexy. But nothing of this would possible without a good diet, I don't mean cut back on calories, because you are going to need them, but the quality, lots of lean protein, good fats ( moderation) and low GI carbs.

Disagree
- I have been swimming for 12 years, and everyone I know that has joined the team has lost at least 15 pounds in the first month. My coaches tell us we are supposed to eat more than an average athlete, considering we have the most intensive practice schedules compared to most sports. Swimmers do not only swim, we have long and hard dryland workouts before we swim. After practice I am almost always burning up, and sweaty. Swimmers do heat up in the water after doing just a one length, if your swimming properly (which is key). Even if your just swimming for exercise, doing the proper workouts and drills will make you toned and very sore, burning fat quickly. A good thing to burn stomach fat is doing the dolphin kick on your back, you'll also have a six pack in no time. Swimming back and forth at a slow pace is just like walking? So obviously you wouldn't burn much fat, you have to sprint and mix up the workout for more than an hour, like most exercise regimes. Swimming is a shortcut!

Could not DISAGREE more with this study
- I spent all last summer doing 'boot camps' . I lost 3% body fat and ruined my plantar tendons. Started swimming with a Masters team in March and lost 7% fat so far. Body heating and cooling have no bearing on how hard your body is working.

Swimming for weight loss
- I understand & agree w these points, however, I think there are other considerstions. The most important thing in an exercise program is consistent activity, not what gives the quickest weight loss. Swimming may the perfect fit for some people. Some people don't like weight lifting in the gym even though it's better for weight loss. Also, in regards to the point that swimming doesn't allow the body to over heat and thus doesn't the increase in metabolism after the swim: I've had some high intensity swims where I get out of the pool flushed and very warm - so that depends on intensity. Also, I don't think body temperature is the only thing that influences increased post exercise metabolism. It would be nice to see some more studies on this subject. But really it doesn't matter - I swim because I love it. And I have lost weight swimming, although I would recommend that ppl use a variety of exercise - swim, bike, walk, run, weight lifting, etc...Swim on!

Weight loss and swimming
- Swimming is an excellent way to keep muscles toned and limber. As far as weight loss, I agree that less caloric intake and more swimming would drop weight.

Completely Agree
- Couldn't agree more with the observations in the article. Swimming improves overall fitness , but if you want to loose fat , it is not so effective. Weight training is the way to go
